The Worshipful Company of Farriers is looking to recruit an individual for a part time role to support its Craft Committee in the position of
Craft Secretary
The Worshipful Company of Farriers was founded in 1356 in the City of London at the request of the then Mayor to manage those involved with the craft of farriery and to uphold the welfare of the horse through good practice, which it continues to do in the 21st century. In 1674 during the reign of Charles II the Company was granted a Royal Charter. The Company maintains its close association with its origins and the craft by being the awarding body for the farriery qualifications of Diploma, Associate and Fellow and sets the standards for the Apprenticeship. The Company continues to play a key role in the welfare of the horse by upholding high standards of farriery both in the UK and in overseeing examinations abroad. It also runs an extensive programme of competitions for shoeing and shoemaking, and best shod horse awards.
The Company maintains a Craft Committee to deal with all matters relating to the profession which do not fall under the direct remit of the Examinations Board. Its main responsibilities are:
- To keep under review the theory, practice and development of farriery
- To propose to the Court of the Company (“the Court”) steps which the Company might take to further the development of farriery
- To arrange conferences and seminars for the discussion of matters connected with farriery and the dissemination of knowledge of new developments of interest to farriers; in particular, Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events
- To arrange, through the Awards Secretary, the Company’s Awards in Farriery and Best Shod competitions at events throughout the UK
Recent developments mean that an increasing emphasis on Continuing Professional Development for all farriers will require increased support to the Company’s programme of events and a new post of Craft Secretary is being created to meet this need.
The Craft Secretary reports directly to the Chairman of the Craft Committee, taking instruction from the Committee through the Chairman for all activities and arrangements. The position is home based and part time and, although hours are as agreed by the Chairman of the Craft Committee, it should be noted that the pattern of working will necessarily include UK travel and some evenings and weekends.
The attached job description details the duties and responsibilities of the Craft Secretary.
Salary for this part time position (initially set at up to one day per week or an equivalent period of time) is £neg. Applications with a CV and covering letter should be submitted to The Master: electronic applications are preferred to m_houghton@hotmail.com. Closing date is 11 May 2022 with interviews the following week. The successful applicant will start at a mutually agreed date thereafter.
