The BFBA is delighted to be involved in a series of three webinars with the British Horse Society. These sessions are open to all. Three weeks, three online chats. Chaired by Erik MacKechnie-Guire FBHS. Followed by a Q&A session.

Week 1 – From Shod to Barefoot

  • Examine the pros and cons of shoeing versus barefoot
  • Focus on the role of the registered farrier
  • Regulations surrounding decision making
  • Maximising the welfare of the horse
  • Suitability choice for different circumstances

Week 2 – Keeping Feet in Great Shape

  • The farrier’s decision-making process
  • How to get the best out of a set of shoes
  • Hoof boots – pros / cons / considerations
  • Keeping your horse’s hooves healthy
  • Remedial Shoeing

This session will touch on good nutrition, pasture management, your coach, what you do with your horse and asks if boots are a good alternative and who is the best person to help owners. Anatomy is so important; our feature farriers will give insight into balancing a foot and the decision they make when first confronted with a horse and their owner. How to do the best for the horse.

Week 3 – Surfaces & Competing

  • What are the rules around shoeing and barefoot?
  • Sporting considerations
  • All about surfaces
  • The judges’ perspective
  • Competing from amateur to Olympics
  • Safety
  • Considerations for the five domains

This third session is about sport and modern surfaces – from sand to synthetic, fibre, rubber, recycled, indoor and outdoor all influencing the hoof. Competing and the rules surrounding shoeing and the different circumstances will all be discussed as well as safety, slipping and speed. Also, the role of the judge, giving the right impression and ultimately back to where we started three weeks ago – equine welfare and the miracle that is the equine hoof.

The talks will be delivered by Microsoft Teams and you will receive the joining link by email a couple of days prior to the event.

These sessions are provided FREE OF CHARGE and don’t forget to register your CPD!
